When schoolsnolongerconducted in-personclassesinSeymour,theClubremained openallday,servingasanimportantresource,especiallyforfamilieswithoneormoreadultsworkinginessentialpositionskeeping themfromremaining athome.

TheglobalpandemichasforcedtheBoysandGirlsClubtobenimbleinwaysitneverimagined.Forexample,ithasalwaysbeenclean,butthecrisisrequiredanewlevelofcleaning,sanitizinganddisinfectingpreviouslyunknown–notjustattheendoftheday,butatthestartoftheday,threetimesduringthedayandafterspecialprojectsandactivities.

TheClubalsoevolvedtoplayacriticalroleindistancelearning,workingwithstudentsatvariousageandgradelevelsaswellasteachersandschoolsacrossmultipledistricts.Inmanycases,Clubstaffcalled teachersorusedvideoconferencing tomakesuretheywere clearonassignmentsandguidingstudentsappropriately.

Butmaybethemostchallengingtaskhasbeentodevelopandcontinuethestaff’sspecialroleasmentor,coach,cheerleaderandconfidantbehindamaskorfromsixfeetaway–orboth.TheClubisnotgivinguponitsmissiontoinspireandempowerallyoungpeople,“especiallythosewhoneedusmost,torealizetheirfullpotentialasproductive,caringandresponsiblecitizens.”

HeusesthemasacriticalpartofhisoccupationaltherapyatCourageKennyRehabilitationInstitute,astate-of-the-artrehabilitationandresourcecenterforindividualswithdisabilitiesandcomplexorchronicmedicalissues. 

CumminsemployeesintheGreaterTwinCitieshavepartneredwithCourageKennysince2006toadapt,customizeandinventbothmechanicalandelectronicdevicesforchildren,likeDempseyBecker,andadultswithdisabilitiesusingbroadengineeringandtechnicalskillsthroughdesignworkknownasassistivetechnology. 

Todate,theyhavemodifiedmorethan7,000toysanddevicesforCourageKennyclients.Lastyearalone,whentheyreachedarecordlevelofinvolvementwiththecenter,Cumminsemployeesusedtheirtechnicalskillstomodifymorethan1,100toysforchildren,makingthetoysmoreaccessibleandbettermatchedtotheirabilities.Thesetoysalsoserveastherapyenablers,encouragingchildrentocontinuedevelopingphysicalandmotorskillswhenpossible. 

Dempsey,whoprimarilyusesawheelchair,enjoysbeingtransferredtoabattery-poweredcarduringtherapysessions.HeusesswitchactivatorsmountedtoitsheadresttodriveitaroundtheCourageKennyfacility.It’smorethanjustathrillride,though;thisgiveshimpracticecontrollinghisheadmovementsandstrengtheninghisneckmuscles.Hisfavoritetoyisapuppyguitarthatwasmodifiedwithbrightlightstoaccommodatehisvisionimpairment. 

“Heletsusknowhowmuchfunhe’shavingbykickinghisfeetandgivingagoodbellylaugh,”saidDempsey’smother,KellyBecker.“Hedoesn’trealizehe’sworking;he’sjusthavingfunplayingwithtoys.”

It’sfunforthevolunteers,too.BrianHaupt,CumminsElectrificationIntegrationSoftwareEngineersaid,“IlikevolunteeringwithCourageKennysinceitusesmyskillsasanengineeranddoingthingsIalreadyenjoydoing.Ialsolikethatitishelpingpeoplewhootherwisecan’tachievethesamequalityoflifewithoutwhatweprovideorcontribute.”

ThisworkexpandsbeyondtheMinnesota-basedteam.TheyjoinCumminscolleaguesinDubai,Singapore,andtheUnitedKingdombysharingassistivetechnologydesignstopartnerwithorganizationsandserveindividualswithdisabilities.

class,whichfocusesontheenvironmentandisgearedtowardstudentsinthesecondgrade,hasreachedmorethan120studentsoftheYanjingLittleSwanSchool.

Asasexworker,Enemofacedviolenceanddiscriminationinseveralforms,butshewasdeterminedtomakeenoughmoneytogotoschool.Sheeventuallysavedenoughtoregisterforclasses.Followinggraduation,shereceivedanapplicationfortheRiseUpworkshopwhileshewasworkingforanonprofitthatadvocatedfortherightsofsexworkers. 

Throughtheworkshop,shegainednewskillsinleadershipandnetworking.Thisenabledhertosecuregrantfundingtolaunchanonprofitorganizationfocusedonimprovingrelationsbetweenlawenforcementandthesexworkerpopulation.Hermissionistoendviolenceagainstsexworkersbypoliceinherstate. 

Pitanwasalreadydevelopingnationalprogramsforwomenandgirlsbeforesheparticipatedintheworkshop.Shehadbeeninspiredtodothisworkwhenshesawgirlsinherregionstrugglingtoattendorfinishschoolandgettingmarriedbeforetheywereready. 

Attheworkshop,shelearnedtheimportanceofincludinglaw-andpolicy-makersinstrategicandeffectiveadvocacy.Asaresult,sheisfocusingherworkonthepassageofanationallevelgenderandequalopportunitybill,whichaimstoreducegenderdiscrimination,protectwomen’srightsandincreasewomen’sopportunitiesinbothpublicandprivatespacesacrossNigeria. 

“IwillknowIamsuccessful,”saidPitan,“whengirlsandwomeninvariouscommunitiesactivelyparticipateindemandingfortheirrightsandensuringvariousexistinglawsandpoliciestobettertheirlotareadequatelyimplemented.”
